Make a bootable USB with external tool

USB has replaced CD/DVD after their extinction as bootable disks to install or upgrade OS. In this blog, we will see the steps to use a USB as a bootable drive from an external tool (Rufus).

Requirement:

  • USB :
    • Min 4GB storage for 32-bit Operating system
    • Min 8GB storage for 64-bit Operating system
  • The device should support the standard USB 3.0
  • ISO file for the desired OS (Linux/Windows/UEFI etc)
  • Rufus utility. Download the free latest version.
    • File size: 1MB
    • Formatting of pen drive required
  • Laptop or Desktop which needs new OS or upgrade of OS

Steps

1. Download the latest version of Rufus utility from their site for free.

2. Open the program and select the USB drive in “Device

3. Select the ISO file in “Bot selection

4. Select the “Image option” and “File system

5. Click on “Start“. Accept the notification “All Data on this device will be destroyed

6. It will take a few mins for your device to be ready. Click on “Finish” and eject your hardware

7. Plug the USB to the machine you want to install the OS. Boot the machine and it should ask for “To boot from drive press any key”. Follow the instructions. It will take a few hours to get your OS ready to use.

Note: For Windows ISO, various versions can be downloaded legally from the Microsoft site. However, you need a product key for the activation and legal use of the OS.
